Bring on the Hocus Pocus! An easy DIY pampas grass broom with bewitchin’ style

Learn how I turned some leftover pampas grass from my cousin’s romantic desert glam wedding into the CUTEST witch’s broom decor.

An easy chic Halloween decor DIY. Plus a secret pampas grass tip!

Supplies:

  • Branch for broom handle
  • 1 large stem of pampas grass (or multiple small ones)
  • Dried bunnytail stems
  • Twine
  • Ribbon
  • *Hairspray* (secret ingredient!)

Step 1: Choose a branch

Annie Spratt

Once you find the perfect broomstick handle, remove any sharp twigs and smooth the top with sandpaper. Or simply grind it on cement in different directions until the end is rounded.

Don’t have a branch? No problem. Check your yard for any trees that need pruning/cutting down, ask neighbors if they do, or go up the mountain. If you’re in an urban area check craft stores or garden centers. You can also tie multiple thin twigs or grapevines together to make a thicker broom handle.

Step 2: Assemble pampas grass stems

Liana Mikah

Pampas grass is straight up messy! So pick a place that’s easy to clean… like outside haha. If using a big stem of pampas grass, break it into sections. Then give each stem a shake, and assemble into the desired shape. Add dried bunnytail stems for visual interest.

Step 3: Secure with twine

Tightly wrap string or twine around the pampas grass. Leave about 2 inches of stem to keep it secure.

Step 4: Tie with ribbon

Add a little glam! I considered a moody plum one, but decided on this shimmery champagne ribbon instead. The perfect hint of elegance.

Step 5: Spritz with hairspray

Pampas grass sheds like crazy. But I just learned a secret tip how to prevent pampas grass from shedding.

If you don’t want your new broom to shed everytime you glance at it, then use… hairspray! It’s SO helpful.

Pro tip: Make sure you have the shape you like before spritzing.

Step 6: Put on display

Time to show off your work! Bonus points for styling with black ankle booties—the boot of choice for any modern witch.

Other Style Ideas:

  • Hang vertically on a narrow wall
  • Prop against the fireplace
  • Hang three on a witches’ broom parking display
