How to turn garden leftovers into fall-inspired giant fall wreath sunburst!

Psst… you DON’T have to be a professional florist to make a floral installation.

Avoid the $200-$1,200 price tag and make your own DIY dried floral wall hanging for super cheap!

We’re talking like $5 or less cheap.

And if you upcycle an old piece of floral foam and use dry plants from the garden then you can make this for FREE.

I’ll show you how in just a moment, but first check out these 3 beauties:

Talk about a dreamy floral cloud!

Design trick: use a bunch of the same materials. Really achieves the ‘floral cloud’ look.

All three of these inspo pics have different positives: interesting texture, neutral fall color palette, wow factor size, or cloud-like vibes.

So let’s combine the best stuff together and turn it into a custom art piece: a DIY dried floral wall hanging.

Step 1: Harvest dried flowers

Head out to your garden, into the woods or even ask a neighbor to collect dried foliage. Often they will be throwing it away anyway and will be happy (maybe a little confused? ha!) to give you dead plants. Or there’s always the dried floral section of the craft store.

For this project I used two different sizes of dried bachelor’s buttons (aka cornflowers). They have striking blue blossoms and are super beginner friendly to grow from seed.

Get the look: Buy classic 3 ft bachelor’s button seeds here, and 1 ft jubilee gem seeds here.

Step 2: Attach string to base

Choose a base of either chicken wire or floral foam and attach the string now.

Thrift stores often have floral foam you could repurpose to go easier on the environment. Or find some in a parent’s basement like I did. 🙂

If using chicken wire, nail a square panel of it to your wall, or make a cube out of it to mimic a block of floral foam and attach some string. We used a bit of duct tape to keep the string from cutting through the floral foam.

Step 3: Add ‘rays of sun’

sunburst base

The next two steps are messy. I did this out in my sunroom to make cleanup easier.

Trim the roots off the dried cornflowers, then poke all around your base until it looks full.

Step 4: Add ‘sunburst’

Add visual interest with a mini sunburst. Poke shorter stems into the middle to make a mini sunburst.

Step 5: Hang & admire

Complete the look with a pampas grass witch’s broom.

And that’s it. Boom. Custom statement piece in a couple hours or less. I’ve already gotten compliments!

Now it’s time for you to gather what you love, and turn it into a unique piece with a story behind it. I really believe you can do this.

You’re going to nail fall decor this season!
