Isn’t that moon stunning? Let’s make something like it.
For our purposes we are making a kraft paper moon to be attached to a wall, but you could use a jigsaw and a sheet of wood or some really sturdy cardboard from a mattress box if you needed a free-standing moon backdrop.
Ok, on to the process.
Step 1: Measure wall for size
Using a tape measure and pencil mark the height you’d like your moon to be.
Step 2: Roll out two pieces of kraft paper
You will likely need two pieces of kraft paper, an upper and lower half for your moon. Put weights down on corners to hold the pieces in place.
Step 3: Trace crescent moon shape on kraft paper
Using a pencil trace the moon shape you like.
Step 4: Add crumpled tissue paper
Glue crumpled tissue paper to different spots on moon. Then use mod-podge or watered down glue and go over the top of the tissue paper to flatten it a bit.
Step 5: Paint all gray, then add white
Paint the whole moon gray, let it dry, then add white in places. I usually add a splash of water to thin the paint so it will go on a thinner layer and dry faster.
Step 6: Use large sponge to add accent colors
A large sponge found in the painting section of a craft store gives the moon that bumpy texture look. Add the metallic zinc and pewter in random places to make the moon pop.
Step 7: Let dry, then add more layers for interest
Contrast is visually appealing. So add more of it.
Step 8: Hang it up
I used a mix of poster putty and magic tape to hang it up. Have a second person hold it up to make sure you like where it sits on the wall.
Step 9: Blend the seam
Since your moon will probably be in two pieces, once it’s hung up go over the seam with the large sponge and some paint to blend the seam.
Step 10: Add stars & admire your work
And there you have it, your gorgeous DIY giant crescent moon!
